Default strange engine/starter behavior

OK...this is a first for me....on ANY car. Went to the store, which isn't very far and when I get back home I pull into the driveway, turn the engine off, somehow the engine keeps going with no dash lights on, it sounds like its turning over and running at the same time? At this point the keys aren't even in the ignition. I can hear the exhaust sputtering. So I turn the ignition back on...lights do their normal check procedure and I'm baffled at this point. The car has been running rough for like 30 seconds with the starter still engaged. So I bump the key to start position a couple times and engine returns to normal idle and no starter engagement...HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THIS?

EDIT: I have one possible explanation. Is it possible to accidently engage the starter just before turning off the ignition, and in turn, cause this?

Joe,

Go turn it off a couple of times and see if it does it again. May have just been a one-off fluke

Yeah I tried that jonny and it seemed to be acting normal again. The solenoid could be sticking, but somehow the starter became engaged turning off the engine. And i'm baffled how the spark plugs could still be firing with the ignition in the off position, with the starter engaged. Yeah I hope this is a one off situation, and I believe it will be. Will keep everyone updated.

Sounds like it's "dieseling". I thought that condition went away with electronic ignitions and fuel injection. If it's indeed dieseling, I havent seen that in a loooooonnnnnnggggg time. JB.

if its the same situation,
it definitly is the solenoid because the starter keeps cranking the engine.
