like has been mentioned before... the problem is mold growth on the evaporator core. Using the A/C naturally causes condensation on the core which can lead to mold growth under certain conditions. This is a common problem with virtually any vehicle. I remember a few years ago some manufacturer coming out with a special spray coating for the core that eliminates any further growth on core... but unfortunately I've never actually been able to locate the stuff. If you have the time and the drive, you could always just do some work under the dash, get to the core, and do a throroughly cleaning with some disinfectant.

We notice an alcohol-like smell from the car every now and then. No, not like spilled beer, but more like rubbing alcohol. Very strange, but haven't noticed anything malfunctioning.

I just had the a/c cleaned by my independent Lexus mechanic. I don't have all of the technicals, but apparently they installed a valve which then let them inject a cleaner into the system to clear out the mold, etc. The next time is smells, they'll just open up the valve and respray. There is an actual a/c cleaning kit that they used.
