Question

I'm looking into picking up a used GS400, but really wished they had a manual tranny

I hear the e-shift has a one-second delay when changing gears? Could someoen explain this to me? Does the computer take exactly a second each press or does it have to do with RPM etc.?

Does anyone think it would be possible to modify the computer to allow quicker shifts? Shouldn't this be possible in theory with the right tools/resources?

Default e-shift

The e-shift will have a half of second or a second delay when shifting. Probably a downside of having a smooth transmission.

To have a crisper e-shift, you need to modify the torque converter. I believe some people here have mod their TCs. Maybe they could help

-JD, MGS4 is correct in his reasoning. Our transmissions do not slam shifts thru because Lexus philosophy has always been to provide a seamless sort of driving experience. Therefore, the ECU retards ignition timing to reduce engine power during shifts and shifts more slowly than is necessary, all in the name of imperceptible gear changes. In theory, a revised chip could be burned once all the engine/trans code has been hacked. This has proven (apparently) very difficult in practice. There are several "tighter" torque converters out there which will shorten the shifts considerably and would likely provide all the improvement, short of a manual tranny, that you could want. Not cheap, but not bad either at around $1 - $1.5k.
