Default Registering out of state lexus in Ca

Has anobody bought an out of state Lexus recently and registered it in Ca? I'm looking into getting a 1998 GS400 wich was originally purchsed in Florida, but now has NC plates. I have read some previous threads and it appears it can be done, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks.

I paid close to $1600 for tax and registration for my out of state car. The tax is based on the amount you claim you bought the car for. But as for registering the car, you should be able to register it, but you should read the link that rominl posted.. there is alot of good information there. Also make sure you can smog the car.. let me repeat.. Make Sure You Can Smog The Car. or atleast that it will pass. For some reason my car did not and end up paying more money to get that fixed. Also remember I think you have 20 days after entering Ca for you to register the vehicle.

i think since jan 05, there is a new law that any cars within 4 yrs old (new) doesn't need smog.

at least that's the case if the car is registered in ca already. not sure about out of state

I bought my 1998 GS400 from an out of state seller last July. The car came with a Missourri title and no plates. I had 30 days to apply for Ca license. The process involved an inspection by DMV and then had to pass smog (no problem there). I had to produce a title and bill of sale that showed the purchase price, they get the same tax as if you purchased the car in state. Then pay for license plate based on value at purchase. Worst part is all the waiting in line at DMV. Ultimately you get a new title issued by state of California If the seller will help you with a bill of sale that shows a lower purchase price, you can save some buck$. Tax is like $75 per $1,000 of purchase price. $20,000 car = $1,500 tax. So, if for example car is only $8,000 instead of $20000 you save $900!!!
Granted $900 won't buy a set of rims, but it will come pretty close to a new set of tires for example.
