Question Loose Steering Column

I have a 2000 GS3 and my steering column is messed up. I have about 2-3 inches of play in it at all speeds . The dealer wants to charge me $120 just to look at it and then charge accordingly from there. I would think that this being a safety hazard and all that they would at least look at it for free and determine from there. Has anyone had this occur or have any knowledge of a quick fix for this problem. Thanks

Get a quote from several independent mechanics.

That should give u an idea whether the pricing is too high.

How long have you owned the car? Is the car had been in an accident? A 2-3 inches free play at any speed is a lot, but if it accident related then it's another story.

i agree. the steering column on the GS could get loose over time, just like mine. however, having 2 to 3 inches of play that's very bad. i think you should get the whole steering column as well as the suspensions checked out to see if anyting is completely loose or so.

I have had it for 2 years. Problem started about 6 months ago and has gotten worse over the time period. No accidents that I knew of. Prior owner bought it from a dealership. Carfax showed nothing as far as accidents, but who knows. I will get some quotes and go from there. Thanks for the advise. I will advise when I get an answer, just in case anyone else comes across this.

yeah definitely keep us posted how it goes. i have play in the steering column, but that's coz' of cracked and worn out rubber bushings. however it's maybe at most an inch. 2 to 3 inches, that's a lot man
