Hey guys,

I'm planning to tint my 2000 White GS400 in the near future. I am going to go with the "Titanium/Platinum" Metalized "mirror" tint, not the usual black tint because the metalized ones don't fade, correct?

I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to metallized tints, so I was hoping some of you guys could help me out.

What colors are there? Are there kinds that just silver like a mirror? The ones I've seen are like the tint on the rear windows od the RX300....greenish. I'm wondering if thats my only choice...?

I will probably be going with 50% all around...I don't have navigation so that shouldn't be a problem, but I ask you this: If i ever have to remove the tint from the rear window, will it "pull off" the rear defroster and screw it up in any way?

What are some good brands of titanium tint? Any of you guys in SOuthern California have any places you recommend? Thanks!

Cool Re: Tint

Intellexual,

One of my interns use to work at Exlnt Tint in Anahiem. Until he started graduate school. He has tinted all three of my Lexus, my Mercedes and my Porsche. Call me he has only the good stuff and he does an excellent job.

Default great referral for So. Cal

Intellexual,

I just got my 2001 GS300 with Nav/ML today and it looks fantastic! I did 35% on the sides (front and rear) and 20% on the back.

I opted for metallic, and thus far (holding breath) haven't seen any problems with my navigation. They use Johnson Films (good reputation), and the metallic film I got comes with a lifetime warranty if I remember correctly.

The place I went to did a top notch job, as they did for 3 other friends of mine, all who've been very impressed with the work. You should give them a call:

hey Intellexual I have experianced with a lot of tint on my cars in the past and till now,... anyways I have right now a teh Mirror tint ,, and I mean MIRROR MIRROR u cant see anyone in the car... I own a GS400 Black put on Mirror then Black REAL DARK,, now Mirror again ,,, anyways if you will go with Mirror tints ,, PLEASE use 3M tints ,, they have an anti scratch coating which helps ,, Mirrord tints intend to show scratches more than Black tints do over a period of time. but you have to love the looks ,,

PS* mirror tinting for the GS model can go between 100-220 dollars depending on the place you take it and the tint you want,, I usualy buy the tint directly from 3M or just find a tint shop,, by now I know most tint places and always get a quote for 100 dollars not bad I change my tints about once every 6 months or so to make them always look nice and clean and not decolored or scratched

alright if i remember correctly, metallic tint just messes with the am reception on your car.

and about fading, if your going to get 50%, the normal tint should never fade. i know at my tinting place, as long as you dont get 5%, you have a lifetime fade warranty on it. 5% tint only has a 5 year year warranty (which is still a long time).

right now i have the normal tint. 5% on the back and on the two rear windows and 35% on the two front windows. i get lots of compliments from every age group..i feel it was the best decision (my cars silver). Ive had it for a year and a half now, and its like brand new. as long as you use the best tint, and do it at a real good place, the normal tint should last forever.

im against the metallic tint. sure its different, and shinny and stuff..but i feel nothing will ever beat plain black dark tint. metallic tint is more of a trend thing..its like the electron blue civic si's. you get it cuz its rare and different..not necessarly nicer..and trends fade out..ill always stick with my nice limo tint in the back on all my cars.

and about changing your tint every year..why would you do that? just do it the best the first time and your set for at least 5 years gauranteed.

Angry GS 300 TINTS

I just got my tints put on the car 18% reflective (front, rear, and rear window) and I have a problem with the nav unit. It will no longer see the satellite signals. First off I would like to know where the antenna for the nav unit is located, and in case it is located on the rear window, is there a way to install another antenna in the place of the OEM one. Please email me as soon as anyone figures out anything. It's really annoying not being able to use the nav because of tints!!!!

I'm very surprised that you have not had any problems with your nav. I have seen so many times the metallic tint cause a depravation of satellite signals. If you can see the "GPS" icon on your screen your ok. When that comes on you have 4 satellites tracking you.

Sorry to hear that, but with all that tint, how did you expect the window antenna to be able to see the satelites??

Your only solution is probably an external (perhaps roof mounted) antenna.

Fierce GS - I'm with ya on the whole Metallic Tint issue. Just a fad that will fade. I have 5% Black Limo tint all around and 70% on the windshield....works for me and keeps the prying eyes out...

Something to keep in mind: from 5 to 50%, all tints have the same UV protection. I always use 35% all around (bronze on my gold GS4), and never had any problems, plus driving at night is rarely a problem (unless I'm looking for a street in low lighted areas). No reflection from instruments at all, and I can be seen from outside while driving, but with the sunshade closed and the windshield cover on when parked, it's very hard to see inside.
In my 100º+ climate, it's amazing how much more efficient the AC works with the tinted windows, and the sun bothers you a lot less with it. I'm not a fan, but my car looks better and it's a necessity here.
