Default A/C Inquiry

I think my A/C system is shot, nothing but hot air. I heard a loud whining and grinding type of sound, then hot air. When I got out of the car I could literally hear a hissing sound and that weird smell, also found "the wet spot". Has anyone had the entire A/C system done and approximately what was the cost and the turn around time? I just bought a new jar of vaseline to help ease the pain.....

what kind of wierd smell is it? an elecrtric smell? rubber? That may help determine what it may be. Also have you had any work done to the car like the engine being replaced? the air conditioning unit can be in the way. To cut corners it could have the juice let out to move it making things easier.

Cool

About A $1000 to replace the compressor and recharge the system if that's all that's wrong. Sounds like it is the compressor.

I was going to mention you could save some money by checking on EBay, however you have to remember, if you buy used parts you get no warranty on the part. So if you take a used or remanufactured compressor to a local shop and it burns up 3 months later, you will have to pay for labor and a new compressor all over again! You're probably better off buying the compressor from a quality AC shop that stands behind it with a quality warranty! You'll pay less in the long run.

Thanks for your responses! I did think about the lack of warranty protection when buying used parts, so I guess I will have to suck it up and dig deep!!!! Thanks again!!!
