Default starter whining

This is really weird, first I'm having problem with the factory problem and now everytime I try to start the car the starter makes this clicking and then whining noise, but the engine doesn't turnover or cranks. could this be related to the factory alarm? just wondering if anybody have the same problem. Anybody know or wanna take wild guess what's wrong with the car?

thanks

it sounds like your starter is on it's way out..The whining is the reason I say this..I have been told by my mechanic that the starter is a common item that goes bad on the first gen GS..Hope this helps..

Before I replaced the starter and spend $500, I want to know if it's just the relay that's bad, anybody know where is the starter relay?

thanks!

The relay is like $26. If it is dead, you'll only get silence when turning the key. The relay will be located in the engine compartment fuse block.

Generally when the starter clicks it is becuase the armature shaft is not able to extend and turn when voltage is applied. I just had mine done and the cost is not pretty but for you I-6 guys, it's a lot less. Highest dealer quote was $1066 I got mine done for $700. (On the V-8 the intake has to be removed. )

Dude, you should buy a starter at Pep Boys and put it in yourself or have a shop do it. I bought a starter from them 2 years ago and my Dad and brother were nice enough to put it in for me. No problems and the part is something like $150.
