Performance Chip
Has anybody put in a performance chip on their 1st generation GS? Results? I'm thinking about doing it because they sell them pretty cheap on ebay and supposedly add 15-20hp. . .
For 15-20 hp, are you willing to install something that could destroy your engine? Now, if it was 100hp and lots of ppl had done it, then maybe. But, it's 15hp. You probably wouldn't even notice it. BTW - if you hadn't noticed, you didn't buy a sports car. Don't waste your money on things you don't need.
Actually, the GS is considered a sport sedan. I dont think a chip specially designed for a GS would ruin the engine because they are made to keep settings within the parameters set by the manufacturer.
It's like $1000 at least for the chip isn't it? TRD made one I think. that would be a lot of money. I think the computer in the GS does a decent job already. The engine just doesn't have the low-end power that we all would like. What can you do? Try some lighter wheels/electric fan mod. That should really help get you moving.
I come from the land of modding the 300Z. In that world a chip replacement is a first step, but the performance improvement is vast - 100HP. For 15hp I would spend my money elsewhere. Chip upgrades in non-forced induction engines is a huge waste of money IMO and the risk is simply not worth it.
Yeah i saw those chips on ebay too, about a couple of months ago. They sell for super cheap $20 or something. I figured it couldn't work too good.
I am learning to be happy with the power the GS has, if i want more and don't care about blowing up my engine i guess i will add some nitrous.
FYI:
Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes then reconnect it to reset the transmission's ECU. The car will feel a lot faster after that.

I just replaced my battery Saturday and felt the same thing. The old battery was holding a charge but it had been depleted a few times and wasn't holding a full charge. I assumed it was the new battery that made the car feel like that, but it could be the transmission as you mention. Anyone else have an opinion? I'm not sure I understand how the transmission would make it feel slower outside of shifting earlier, but I'm sure there's a lot I don't know about this car.
