so apparently tesla has taken 1.2 MILLION reservations for cybertruck, most in u.s./canada.
it's not about to cancel reservations in australia at least, probably because it realizes it has NO chance of fulfilling them in the next several years.

Cybertruck is like the Model X but 10 times more so. The X was delayed mostly because of the highly complex doors (which are awesome) Cybertruck is like that but on steroids the entire body structure is something that has never been attempted before. Because it's damn near impossible.
If it ever comes out it will be great, much lighter than other electric trucks and by then 4680's will be well along the refinement curve. Elon says middle of next year. Sure, Jan.

Pre-orders really nothing here.

well, apart from their being millions of them and a high likelihood that the majority will convert into sales and revenue.
you always seem to bring this up, and then when order banks open demand outstrips supply and continues to show the point to be moot, as it will be here. The cybertruck reservations are going to convert to orders, and those orders are going to convert to sales.

People cancelling Cybertruck orders is about the last thing Tesla had to worry about.

Pre orders are designed to help manufacturers gauge demand as much as they enable customers to secure a vehicle. Deposits on the other hand are designed to at least somewhat invest and engage the customer in the process to maximize the likelihood that the order converts into a future purchase.

In many places that might not be lawful. Deposits are required to be refundable in California, for example.

BUT…when it is not refundable…that is more meaningful.

In that case it’s being characterized as a fee to place an order, and not as a deposit. If it were the latter, it would have to be refundable here. A subtle but important distinction, which no doubt comes with terms that make it clear that it is a fee and not a deposit.

Great video! @mmarshall you need to watch this video as you love the exterior design so much.
I watched it. First, it sounded more like a company ad or PR than an actual engineering explanation. Second, while it may be true that the triangular frame-design and sheet-steel thickness gives it a strength-advantage, that pyramid-point does also contribute to substantially less space-efficiency than a traditional three-box pickup.
