Mercedes to add new exterior light color to confirm car is self driving
Mercedes has been approved to add a new blue light to the exterior clusters to let other drivers know that the car is driving itself
EQS and S Class initially. Mercedes, remember, has approval for full Level 3

If Tesla had played its cards right, it could have had that spot. Oh Elon......

Nice way to indicate to others what is going on.....but I hope no one then decides to mess with/intentionally push blue lit cars.
Not surprising that the Germans are pulling ahead with EVs and will soon resume their place as the outright leaders

It’s not really clear to me as to what I’m supposed to do differently if I see an MB with turquoise lights. Do I stay further away? Can I get closer? What do I do with this new information? Not trying to be difficult or cynical, but what does this mean to me?

It's less for you and more for Mercedes to have some form of liability control in case of an accident, i.e. some fool blames the car for him crashing.

@signdetres , If I see you coming at me with Blue lights blazing, should I duck? 🤣
In all seriousness, will all EQS/EQB etc be able to get self driving, or is this exclusive to future models?

It's only available on 2024s that have the Drive Pilot Pre-Installation Package. It's only available on cars in California and Nevada right now (those are the first 2 states to approve it for use). There is a 2024 in a Los Angeles dealer's inventory that has the package already. You can tell because of the buttons on the steering wheel and the lidar sensors in the grille.

The Drive Pilot package is a no-cost option for all the Level 3 hardware so I assume that means there will be a subscription or one time fee after the fact.

these cars have Level 3 self driving. With level 3 certification, drivers aren’t required to pay attention the way the are with Level 2. So these lights let other road users and police know the car is driving under its own command and is under control if it appears to other road users that the driver isn’t obviously paying attention.
