Default home charger

so now i have an ev i have to get a home level 2 charger.

i picked a spot to mount that's between the small and big garage doors so could be used by a car on either side. does that make sense? i'm guessing with the wire going up, over and down to the electrical panel it's about 20 feet. you can see a bit of one of the panels on the far right (that one is my generator sub panel).



anyway, i'm trying to understand the approaches, which seem as follows:
  1. DIY or electrician does a NEMA 14-50 outlet, and use a charger that plugs into one of those.
  2. I went to hyundaimarketplace.com which after filling out the info says Duke Energy will do it with charger for estimated $2000-$2500 including charger. does provide a 30% federal tax credit (i have option as to whether i want it hard wired or nema 14-50). page also says the charger is free for new ioniq owners, so that makes no sense. they use a chargepoint flex level 2 charger... any good?
  3. anything else?
i do have a dryer outlet with 30A breaker in my barn (in distance in photo) which has an indoor 3 holes instead of newer(?) 4. can that work temporarily at least?
if i just bought a charger does it include 3 and 4 prong adapters so i could use it now in the barn and later in the garage?

Rather than me trying to explain watch this. Most expensive part is the wire, outlet itself is probably less than $50 circuit breaker around that. Check out Amazon for the wire especially, I find it is usually far cheaper than going to the big box store (like half the price).


$2000-$2500 is ridiculous.

Just do #1, have an electrician install a NEMA 14-50 in your garage where it makes sense.

It should not be anywhere near $2000-$3000. Maybe $1000 max, but that’s only if you need to run a lot of wire (this is the majority of the cost)

We had to run 60 feet of wire and we came in just under $1,000, like $997 (but this also included having another outlet in the garage replaced and grounded correctly).

That's a long run do you remember what gauge wire used?

I’m not sure. I just took a look at the invoice and all it says for that line item is

65 ft of “6/3 NM-B W/G wire” so hopefully that means something to you…

I believe I used 6 gauge wire and a 60 amp. Paid $500 for the charger from Amazon. Paid electrician $200 to install the Nema 14-50 outlet and install charger. Received $250 gift card from electric company.

Yes, that's 6 gauge 3 wires (and has ground)

6 gauge is beefy wire that's fine for your outlet. I wouldn't try and draw 60 amps continuous though if that's the breaker used.

Agree, NEMA 14-50 with a 50 amp fuse will work fine. If you do decide to get a dedicated charger, these are good options:

Same, I just had a NEMA 14-50 outlet with a 50 amp fuse installed by an electrician. I did not purchase a charger, just using the cable supplied by Polestar.

went with 60 amp because charger is 50amp. If I’m not mistaken have to go higher on the breaker than what the charger is capable of.

What's the max current your charger can draw? With Tesla's, the mobile connector only charges at 32A max. The hardwired wall connector can do 48A. I've also heard of issues with cheaper outlets, so if you go that route, don't skimp. It also requires an expensive ground fault breaker. I think most direct connect chargers already have that covered.

Our direct connect wall charger install required upgraded service (100A -> 200A). That includes a new panel and breakers, plus working with the city to change our connection cable outside to the house. Then running 55' of 6 gauge copper wire (2ea) and 1 10 gauge. All through 3/4" metal conduit, due to code in this area. My first estimate was almost $14k! I got a couple others and chose the company with the better reviews and experience and paid $4,500. That said, I was surprised by how many companies never even called me back. I called 10 and only heard back from 4. Bottom line, get as many estimates as you can.

We ran 50" of #6 from 50A breaker, under house, to a NEMA 14-50 recepticle in the garage. A union electrician came over on a Saturday, bought everything and did the installation. $600 all in, including tip. Copper wire was expensive. Didn't take him much time, maybe an hour or so? I use the Tesla Mobile connector that came with the car; perhaps I will install a Wall Charger one of these days.

We also use a Tesla mobile connector to charge our cars. We just slap on this Lectron adapter when the Mercedes needs to charge.

my barn dryer plug is 10-30 type, and breaker is 30a so if i want to use that in a pinch, i have to have a charger that's compatible.




found and ordered this:

hopefully just plug it in and it works. this is temporary until i have the garage good to go. only 6kW but 10x what the level 1 seems to be delivering.

i've already reached out to an electrician for a 14-50 in the garage. looks like i need over 30ft of wire going up across, around, and down.

there's sooo many charger brands/models for 14-50.

anyway, really appreciate all the input so far.
