Rivian R1S Ongoing Impressions
that parking lot looked pretty empty, was there anything around to do for the 45 mintues?
My buddy took delivery of his R1S (Quad motor) last week and I spent some time riding in it and driving it over the weekend. A few observations (as a Tesla owner as well) -
- Overall, I really like it. I think as a brand they are doing some really cool things and will have a very loyal fan base. Some of the quirks like the bird chirp sound it makes when it locks as you walk away, the hidden flashlight, camping mode, etc. really solidify the potential customer base.
- Very solid build feel - doors feel heavy/substantial. Interior quality is really nice - lots of soft touch surfaces. Has the perfect blend of feeling rugged and luxurious all at once.
- Love how the frunk opens and closes with the push of a button - a nice touch compared to my MYP (which is more like opening a traditional hood).
- Love the hidden bluetooth speaker and flashlight. Great ideas.
- Nice seating position for all passengers, 3rd row is fine for kids or adults (short trip for adults)
- Interesting having Alexa be the voice command system. Although it completely botched our attempt to do voice command of an address as our destination..
- Not sure I'd want it adjusting the ride height as often as it does, wonder if that can be configured or disabled.
- Drives very nice, even with the monster off road tires his came with. Something about the driving position, shape of the hood, and steering/turning feel at times reminded me of a Wrangler (not in a bad way)
- I felt like I could hear the motor(s) quite a bit more while accelerating compared to any Tesla I've ever driven. More of a high pitched sound. Acceleration is great and the one pedal driving sensation feels pretty similar to Tesla, although I think Tesla feels smoother for some reason (I know it's weird since there are no gears).
- Back up camera didn't seem to be a very crisp image, looked slightly blurry/grainy to me. Tesla's back up camera is really clear and high resolution.
I asked my friend if he had discovered any bugs or glitches yet and he said there were only a couple of minor things (both dealing with the infotainment screen). I came away very impressed. I guess the Model X would compete with this in terms of size, just seems like they're two very different vehicles. I'm rooting for Rivian to succeed and genuinely think they will. Based on my experience, I'd definitely be a customer of the R1T or the R1S.

Thanks for sharing! I agree with a lot of your critiques. I turned off auto height adjustments because it liked to go from standard to low whenever I hit 60 and then back to standard whenever I went below 45, but that happens a lot during my commute and got annoying. I also switched off Alexa as soon as I got the car because it's not great. All cameras are pretty grainy. I wouldn't want to try to use it to read a license plate after an accident. I like the solid clunk of the doors, but it's pretty hard for my kids to close the doors (6 and 8)
I get it on the height control - our LX570 does that and I can't stand it either.
R1S is an impressive rig - I love the thud of the doors, way more insulated and substantial feeling than my Model Y. Hope you continue to enjoy it. I'm a fan.
Yup, when you open the frunk, there's a felt false floor that folds up and magnetically attaches to back of the frunk. Under that is a hard plastic bottom that has a drain plug.
I'm officially a Rivian share holder. I think they have a real "brand" which is one of the things I look for in individual stocks. Excited to see what they do in the coming years.
On another note, with them using the Tesla charging tech - I assume this means that Tesla owners who have a charging system at home will be able to switch to a Rivian and instantly be able to charge at home?
I could see Rivian being a potential brand that people would shift to based on vehicle offering.

Dropped my Rivian off for service on Monday. Mostly minor things - alignment and hood rubbing, but also 1 surprise add. I was sitting at the Starbucks drive thru with the wheel turned 75% to the left. I noticed by air compressor kick on and try to raise the car, but my front driver's side was sagging and the compressor couldn't lift it. Once I straightened it up it got back to the proper height, but better to have them check it out while it's there.
Also, having to drive to Brooklyn for service is an absolute nightmare. Took 2 hours just to get from central NJ to Brooklyn and another 2 to get back. The Edison, NJ site can't open soon enough. I was talking to the service rep and Edison got delayed because of the NJ dealer's association and that debacle took a few years to clean up
