all this talk of taxes is making me sick... and somehow people are ok with shoveling money to local, state, and federal coffers for the 'privilege' of getting to work and school, running errands, shopping, etc.
you guys may hate florida for many reasons but i think my registration is $100 a year for 2 cars. no state income tax. 6% state sales tax (i have 1% locally). could be worse...
Florida’s car insurance is the highest of the US. Look at MMs post

In Tennessee the legislature is looking at an annual fee on EVs, paid at tag renewal, that would go into the state road maintenance/improvement fund in lieu of the $.274 per gallon gasoline tax paid at the pump (of which about 30% goes to cities and counties). They are also talking about a smaller fee that would be paid by hybrid vehicles. No additional fees/charges on the electricity used to charge vehicles have been mentioned. TN has no personal property tax, just a tag renewal of about $60 per year.

It's idiotic policy to force people to go EV and then tax them for it when they do. I work in the industry and I see these two specific positions to be very counterproductive to EV use and adoption. Give us choices and we will find what works. Make it appealing and do not charge us more for getting in to EVs.

some of that is related to how many elderly on the state, plus how many zillions of tourists, huge percentage foreign, who aren't familiar with driving in the u.s. so there's a lot of accidents.
plus mm's post shows florida is only marginally higher than many other places.
of course it does... plus, with the huge # of tourists, gas tax is important to the overall revenue picture. almost all states do i believe. maybe not alaska, the state actually PAYS its residents to stay!
road maintenance/changes have to be funded somehow, and since ev's don't use gas, the revenue has to come some other way.
Sure and it's also true that an EV the size of my Civic probably weighs 800 pounds more so they beat up the roads a bit more. From the policy side, I would go gradually and say, hey, EVs are cool and here's why before saying you absolutely must do this and we are going to charge you for it.

The higher insurance rates is the result of more natural disasters. Hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, drought, wildfires, and more. For both car and especially for dwellings.

and yet many of those states in the top 10 like delaware, michigan and new york have none of those issues.
bash florida all you want. i don't care.
1000 a day still moving here. gee, mostly from north east.
Nobody is bashing Florida. Just showing how it's not all sunshine all the time. 🐊
Numerous insurance companies in Florida have closed their doors in recent years in a slow-moving collapse for the industry, forcing rates to spike and property owners to turn to the state-owned insurer of last resort.
that's about home insurance, not car insurance, but ok.
up here. It’s coming to bundle car and home insurance together that is how a discount is achieved. So it’s all part and parcel. So Florida has the highest auto insurance and very high home insurance

Let's see how many kinds of taxes I can make up right off the top of my head:
Govt
- Public EV infrastructure tax - cuz you know they may install chargers at every corner of the street once gas stations go away
- Infrastructure service tax
- Carbon tax - u know electricity have to come from somewhere and just because you moved the pollution from the tailpipe to smoke pipes, is still pollution
- Road maintenance tax - EVs are heavy and are roads require more maintenance
- Raise registration costs
- Raise inspection costs
- Double speeding tix cost
- Battery disposal and recycling tax
Ulitlities:
- Peak time charging tax, typically at night when everyone plugs in
- Faster charging through smart meters equipment rental fee
- Smart meters maintenance fee
- Tiered consumptions fee
- Utility infrastructure maintenance fee
- More powerplant tax
