stay away from big cups. . .or else they'll just tip over and spill when you turn or accelerate hard. . .

 

that is probably the only thing I can complain about re: the interior design of the ES

 

yes the cup holders suck.
just hold the cup when you turn but if you have to press on the brake in a hurry, whoops!

 

My passenger seat was full of spilt coffee this morning.

 

i have a temporary solution. what i did was stick about an inch of Velcro on base of bottle and one on base of cup holder.no more falling and spills. But offcourse this only applies to same bottle of water or coffee mug you use. its fine with me. I always make my own coffee or tea and so i use same mug and the Velcro is always there.

same issue sometimes, if i have a big cup and turn left/right doing quite a speed it moves and sometimes could spill so gotta hold it with my right hand when i turn rapidly , thats my solution

 

Had this problem for a while now. Just think of it as an encouragement to not drink in the car. No spills. Or do like me, make the passenger hold it. The least they can do.

Here is my solution to the cup holder problem. I found those cup holders at Walmart (in Canada) last year, for about $5.00 Each. so I bought 1 for each side. I screwed them into the carpeted part of the console below the gear shift, so that if I ever want to remove them, there will not be any marks left behind. The quality is excellent, and are easily adjustable in terms of how wide of a bottle you can fit. They hold any bottle or cup securely, and flip closed when not needed.

Also, they don't interfere with my legs, either when open or closed. When installing, make sure that when your seat is brought all the way forward that it clears the cup holders.

That's a landscaping drainage-pipe cover, isn't it?
I have those in my yard! I didn't know they were called atriums, and could serve as a cup holder when inverted.
I'll never look at landscaping items the same way again.

As is, the small end (the bottom of the planned cupholder insert) is just a bit loose in my 1998 ES 300's "cupholder". The top/big-end is too tall and too solid for our application - it swallows up regular papercups, and doesn't work for mugs with handles... Come to think of it, this stock photo doesn't accurately show the height of the top portion - see the picture below:



So I experimented on this unit (they cost $2.42, so what the hell). To fill out the loose base, I wrapped it a couple times with duct tape. Now it fits perfect. I also cut gaps on oppisite sides of the top so that I can easily extract a paper cup or fit in a handled mug.



Here's the prototype in place. The sloppy duct tape up top is patching a bad cut I made, so ignore it. The side cutouts shown may be a bit wider than needed. I guess I'll go get a fresh one and make the necessary mods neatly. In the meantime, if I get tired of looking at it, it lifts right out and stows in the glovebox :-).

 

What year did they finally upgrade these cupholders?
