Default odometer concern

I have a question, how does a 94 es300 odometer stop working if its digital? I mean it still show the mileage but it doesn't move on go to the next number.

If the speedometer is operating correctly, the problem is probably in the dash itself.

Yes there are possibly multiple concerns that could be the problem in this case. The problem could be the cluster gauges itself, or it could be the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) which in this case is found inside the transmission and I will show you where below. It could also be a problem within the wheel arches itself because the wheel arches send an electronic pulse through to the ECU I believe.

Since you stated that you are having problems with both the speedo not moving, and the odometer not working, I'm going to lean towards the most simple fix and most related concern and say that it is most likley your VSS located on the transmission. This VSS is not cable driven, but it works by rotating a magnet via a gear from inside the transmission and send electronic signals through to the receiver which has a connection to the speedo. This gear tells your cluster gauge how fast you are going, and in turn what distances you are covering. Obviously, if your car thinks it is not going anywhere (as it is displaying 0mp/h) than it wont be reading out your distances on the odometer either.

The VSS is a single unit which takes about 5 minutes to replace. It comes complete and all you need to do is take out the old unit, and replace it with the new one. If you park your car, get out open the hood and you are standing in-front looking down to the engine the transmission is on the right. You need to step to the right around to the front quarter panel and you will have a clear view of where the VSS is located. At the top of the transmission, also where the transmission is connected to the engine, you will see the VSS. It has a black connector sitting out the top of the tranny. Pretty easy to spot really. Unclip the connector, and unscrew the single bolt holding the VSS in. It than simply should come out. You need to apply force when pulling it out, and it can be swiveled from left to right. It is not a screw in.

Hope this helps. Tell us if you buy a new VSS, if its the VSS it should work with a new one.

@ParkerGen - do you know where the location of the VSS is on a 2000 es300? Just spent 30 minutes looking for it, can't seem to find it.
