Default interior noise level

Hi everyone. I purchased a 2019 Es 350 UL with 50K as CPO. I had an 2006 LS 430 many years ago, after that I used Hyundai Azera ( 360K) and Hyundai Sonata LImited (170K) for business. I do about 40k per year and planning to keep my lexus for five years. I am getting used to the car however I find it not any quieter than my Sonata. I read 71 DB on 65 MPH cruise driving on sound meter on my phone on a good highway. That was the reading I had with my Sonata too. I read somewhere that it should be 59-60 DB. Has anyone else had measured interior sound levels? I would appreciate any input on this.

Thanks

I don't know where you read that. I've seen at least two reputable reviewers (C/D and Alex on Autos) who both pegged it somewhere around 69 at 70 mph, give or take.

That said, I don't want to sound like an apologist for the ES, but people who are smarter than me about this subject have said that quietness isn't as simple as the dB reading, because the "quality" of noise matters to your comfort too — its frequency, evenness, your subjective reaction to it. In that respect, most testers who've commented on it seem to agree that Lexus has put in a lot of effort in this regard.

But that's in the eye of the beholder, and clearly you're not completely satisfied. Your UL has all the sound-deadening features an ES has to offer, so if it doesn't please you with its quietness, I'd try a different set of tires. If that doesn't do it for you, maybe test drive a used Genesis G80.

Thanks for the reply,

My next move might be going down to 215/55/17 tire and rim combo. I may like the softer ride too. I do about 40,000 miles per year so I care much more about the comfort than how the car looks from outside. I like the genesis products a lot, I am a Hyundai fan too, I think they make decent cars for the price they are asking. I think G80 looks great however, I do not think that direct injection engine will last 250,000 miles. The biggest reason I bought a Lexus is because of the dual injection system they have.
Thanks again

You ran an Azera to 360k miles? That's impressive. I had a 2014 Azera purchased new and traded at after 60k miles. The engine on cold starts sounded like ball bearings dancing in a can. But some Hyundai engines do last long. A coworker of mine has an Elantra with 305k. Another buddy had a Sonata engine seize with well under 100k miles. Warranty denied for some reason which is not a surprise with the "best warranty in America"

Smart call about the dual injection. And the wheel size reduction is a smart option. Be conscious of your tire choice while doing so, and you should see a real improvement. Good luck in your quest for blissful quiet!

I own a company and we always buy Hyundai products for business due to their longer warranty. I drove the Azera for 320K, and gave it to my employee and he did the rest. we had to swap a used transmission around 270K. we just wanted to see how long would it last. When we sold it as it was still running. On the other hand, my 2018 Sonata limited 2.4 just broke a valve at 172k and i did not want to fix it so I bought a lexus. attached picture is the broken valve. carbon buildup is the major problem with all direct injection cars. Too bad almost every manufacturer switched to that technology. Usually there is no problem until 100k and the percentage of people who keep their cars to 100-150k not much I assume. as I said before, I will be putting 40-45k per year to the lexus. It will be interesting to see how will it hold up..

An Elantra with 305K is very impressive because it has a smaller engine. we currently have one with 80K on it an no problems so far..

I will probably go with Michelin defenders as it is original because I purchased tire and wheel warranty. Not sure if my warranty be voided had I purchased a different brand. I am going back to dealer tomorrow due to bent rims. I will ask them about it..

i do not think manufactures recommend changing transmission fluid anymore. I find it very weird, at some point any fluid goes bad in my opinion. I think we have the same car, what is the most thing that bothers you?

Mine is an FSport but yes same power train. The 19s have some issues with a jumpy trans most noticeable when slowing down 2-1 makes a bit of a thump. Other than that, no issues. 42k on the clock and so far just oil changes and a new set of shoes. Cabin filter I change 2x per year and engine air filter I changed at 25k and will do again every 25k.

I have a 2020 ES300h with the acoustic rims with the EL440 Bridgestone Turanza tires. Mine is quiet over a good smooth highway and road noise is pretty unnoticeable. Tire noise also very low on local roads. However, over broken or rough highway it seems to be louder than my old 2018 Audi A4 with Pirelli Cinturato. I think it has to be do with the suspension on the Audi was able to absorb and adjust to smaller bumps better (multi link front and back). As far as vault like, I don't get that feeling like publications have mentioned.
