Nope, one way only. Push the button inside the car and the trunk opens, push again and hold for 5 seconds and - NOTHING! Had to get out of the car and push the "close" button on the trunk lid to close it... Daughter has a 2019 NX that opens and closes, also has folding mirrors... Mine has neither. Hers cost $43,000. and mine cost $53,000.

That just seems incredible. Why the difference I wonder. The only logic argument I can think of is that if you open the rear trunk/hatch, you are planning to place something in it or remove something. So consequently you are positioned at the rear of the vehicle where it should be easy for you to press the button on the trunk lid … if only your hands weren't full. So in practice, if you just removed something requiring both hands, you have to set it down to push the button, or make a second trip to the trunk just to push the button. I know this is one of those petty first world problems, but it just seems like a flaw in the design logic. I am left wondering if this has something to do with safety - you have to be within visual range of the trunk to make sure nobody is trapped in it before closing it, which isn't really a problem with a hatchback like the NX.

There are other car brands that offer foot activated opening. No way to make the trunk power close simply. You can't buy parts for another model and install them without metalwork and some "engineering" What you got is what you got. The spring adjustment is a helpful thought. Has anyone actually done it since it was posted to confirm it makes a difference? Please tell us. This subject has been discussed at length before. Why Lexus doesn't offer this? Lexus hasn't told us, so guessing is all you can do.

This is the standard Toyota/Lexus implementation. I've never understood why.

I can use the fob button or the dashboard switch to open OR close the hatch on my Highlander. On my GS, those switches will open my trunk, but the only way to power close it is by pushing the switch on the trunk itself.

Someone wasn't thinking when this was designed. Here's a scenario that has occurred many times since I got my new ES 350 with an auto open trunk:

Go grocery shopping and come out holding several bags so I don't have to walk back with a cart. Insert foot under rear of the car and voila! trunk opens like magic. Load all bags inside and push "close". Drive home, and park the car, push trunk open button and trunk opens. Get out and lock the car. Walk back and unload bags, hands now full again. Bags are heavy. Uh-oh, how do I close the trunk? Tried inserting foot under car again and almost fell down due to imbalance. No close... well it was worth a try anyway. Put down several bags and press close button and lid closes. Finished... I think that Lexus needs some help in the design department or wherever they think these things out.

Our 2019 ES350 has the foot operation to open and close, It was an option.

Well I also have a 2019 ES350 with the auto open with the foot option but no close. Now I'm wondering if there's a setting to enable closing with your foot as well as opening...

Hmmm. I screwed up... I just went out with the smart key and tried opening the trunk with my foot only. It opened. Then tried closing with my foot only. It closed... Don't know what I was doing incorrectly before but it does work both ways with the foot activation. No close action from inside the car by pressing trunk button only open...

Thanks to STLLEXUS for the tip...

Live and learn. Everybody, buy a new ES if you're upset about trunk not closing automatically. LOL.

when I first got the car i would wave my foot all around under the back bumper and it would not work.I learned all it takes is just a lite kick once at the center of the back bumper with my foot barley going under the bumper.
