Yesterday I had a friend of mine show me his Honda Civic with CarPlay. He was playing Spotify on it. He had also added a relatively inexpensive aftermarket subwoofer. Everything else was stock. That system sounded so much better than the Mark Levinson in my 2018 LS500. I am by no means a bass head, but do enjoy music played at a low level where you boost the bass and treble a bit.

When I heard the ML sound system in my vehicle it was hands down one of the most accurate I had listened to, second best only to my 9.2.4 home theater. One of my all time favorite songs to listen to is Hotel California - Live on MTV/1994 and it sounded amazing with the ML. That being said I am a bass head and in my opinion, it was lacking bass. Which is why I installed aftermarket subs. Now most will say 1500 watts RMS and a 100lb sub box is an overkill, I agree
For the most part with the windows up (HU volume between 50-60), I have the bass **** at 1/4 position, with windows down 1/2, with certain Latin music or low-quality songs 3/4 and have yet to listen to any music with the **** at 100%. The amount of bass produced at 1/2 with hip-hop music is just insane, at 3/4 the front stage is barely audible.
I highly suggest adding an aftermarket sub, in my humble opinion, the difference is night and day.

Adding an aftermarket sub is definitely the way to go. My conundrum is that I generally use this car for long trips with the family and the trunk is needed for all the suitcases (none of them travel light even for 2 days). I've looked around for subs that could replace the stock sub woofer, but haven't really found anything that is a direct replacement that can also be driven by the stock amp. The 2008 LS had a really good ML system with deep rich bass. Sadly every model after that has been lacking in bass.

In a car I want surround sound not 95% of the sound coming from the front. Totally unbalanced. This is true with ML and Pioneer. I am convinced the big base grill I see behind the rear seats produces ZERO sound/base. One major disappointment I have with my 19 ES.
That and the broken blind spot monitor on the driver side the dealer cant fix.

The premium Bose system on my 1998 Corvette sounds better than my 2019 ML system in my opinion. Greatly disappointed...

I consider the ML system to be very good.

And I definitely know that the rear subwoofer works. Because it makes the shelf rattle with bass heavy songs. They just can’t put in a sub just for the sake of it.

You have to get it checked out. As mentioned, with surround off, 65-70% sound comes from the front. And with surround on, it’s pretty much balanced between front and rear.

Nah its not just my car. The very strong "front bias" is very well documented in this 6 page thread. Some dont mind it but most hate it.

I'm just surprised by the logic of some people... it's advertised as having a front stage with surround sound and they get mad that all the speakers aren't playing at the same time. Literally the exact opposite of surround sound.

Those that hate it should have tested it before buying. Me - I did and I love it.
