ECO mode…what is it?
On steady speed the fuel/energy consumption is the same on all modes. Acceleration makes a difference.
According to Toyota, the most efficient way of driving is to keep the needle inside the ECO field. During acceleration to keep the needle at the top of ECO and to release the throttle when you achieve the desired speed, just to maintain the speed.

I agree that acceleration is a big factor overall in determining fuel efficiency. I am not so certain that fuel mileage for the 3 modes would be the same under similar driving conditions though. Has anybody tried testing this theory out? Also, I would think you would need to rule out hybrids regarding your bold statement.
My drive is like 70% local and 30% highway so regardless if I drive in normal or eco - it's both about the same (still crap). On a long highway coast with heat or AC on, Eco definitely takes the win because it adjusts the heat/ac output too. Without anything on, it's comparable.
I don't have exact numbers to back up my half assed speculative experiment but I've concluded that Eco does nothing for me in my day to day driving.
ish? When I first got my 2019, I tried driving a month on strictly Eco and the following month in Normal. Eco is painfully slow in accelerating when you're trying to merge in NYC traffic so I feel like I'm almost flooring it to pick up speed from a yield. (I'm not an aggressive driver)

I can reasonably convince myself the ECO mode would be best used (most economically) under easy cruising conditions on the highway. I can also convince myself SPORT mode with the ES 350 would be best used by people who live in hilly or mountainous areas.. I think I can convince myself that NORMAL mode would be best used under all other conditions. I currently own a Corvette C8 which has a ECO mode that cuts the engine (engine is a V8] into a 4 cylinder by deactivating 4 cylnders.. When I drive the vehicle easily on the highway at cruising speeds (70-80 MPH) I am getting over 30 miles per gallon. Not bad for a 500 horsepower engine.
The F Sport has a Sport+ mode as well. Just depends on what you are trying to achieve. I am buying a E350 UL primarily for comfort on long trips. The C8 I own is probably the most uncomfortable car I’ve ever owned when it comes to driving on long trips. The gas mileage on the C8 is quite impressive though.

People have a range of preferences and tastes. Some people prefer the appearance of F Sport model types and some don't.
There's most likely also cases that distill down to "what's on the dealer's lot that comes closest to matching the buyer's preferences" when the buyer needs to get a replacement for a wrecked or stolen vehicle.
If you spend much time on this forum (or any car forum for that matter) you're going to see quite a few posts of the personal choices, features, mods, swaps, and add-ons type that'll be in your personal "not my cup of tea", "only an idiot would pay that much for that", "complete waste of money", "god awful ugly" etc. categories. Whether or not you reply to such posts is up to you. Sometimes, though, the less contentious course is to just mentally note "not my cup of tea" and proceed on to reading the next post.
Same reason Lexus has 15 different 2025 ES model types with multiple interior and exterior color combinations along with additional options and packages.
