Don't confuse the holdback with volume incentives which is something different. They get the holdback on every unit they move.

The holdback was initiated years ago to add to dealer profit and they could say they are selling car at invoice and also salesmen commission did not participate in the holdback.

I thought I once read it was designed to assist the dealers with marketing/advertising costs.

It's been awhile but I think we received a separate advertising assist. We always looked forward to receiving lump sum each month for holdback. Holdback was only available after car was sold.
