Which it should be with all that forged aluminum compared to steel in the ES not to mention different hubs that reduced weight a bit in the gen 3.2 refresh.

seeiously, gondrive a new IS359 back to back against an ES350 of any variety. No comparison and very different.

Regardless the mileage difference is probably mostly due to wheel width and weight, the IS350 FS RWD has wider rear wheels even compared to the ES FS. And much wider and heavier than the non FS ES. That leads to more rotational inertia.

The final drive ratio might also be different which would affect MPG. You’re not looking at the whole picture. And the transmission is definitely different.
I hope the next ES can have a luxury type forged aluminum suspension variation in order to separate it more from the Camry. Every other car in the ES space makes large use of aluminum like 5 Series, A6, E class etc. the achilles heel of the ES has been the Camry. Economies of scale. it would just bump up the ride and handling refinement to segment standards.

I agree that using those would give the car have a more solid, luxurious feel to it. Lexus gets off cheap by cross using pieces from other cars in their line up. That's a smart thing to do but it does cheapen the car (not in price though but in feel).

The engine in the IS is tuned differently, partly because of the real wheel drive.

I bet that 95% of the drivers of the ES want to have simple suspension and not 14 aluminum arms and bushings like the LS 460 has.

My fifth generation E350 with 145,000 miles has the most simple suspension which even after 17 years feels like new. You can’t have that on cars with aluminum suspension and zillion arms.

inhad a 2001 LS430 that rode like new when I finally got rid of it around 95,000 miles. I had a 1998 BMW 528i that was clunking and wandering all over the road by around 60k miles. Same for my Jag XJ8 which was a 99 or close to that.

I drove a 1997 528iA for a very long time. I can write a book about it.
