Man, I have bad luck with Lexus windshields. Same happened to my LC convertible.
Got this shiner on a freaking interstate on ramp. Came out of nowhere. Truck was way way way ahead of me. Interstate was way to my left. This thing must've gotten launched by a rocket.
Modern auto glass is junk. Toyota used to make windshields that could take 30 years of abuse and not crack now the slightest tap and it's done for. I feel your frustration.
Oooof, bad luck. Maybe invest in a windshield protectant film? It's saved me a few times already, damn all these big rigs and construction trucks with their dried up mud.
Do not accept Safelite. Insist on OEM glass. Windshields on cars like ours are sophisticated and contain sensors for multiple systems -- in fact, IIRC, they need to be not just installed but also calibrated. Cheap windshields can cause a meaningful degradation in function.
Yes, my insurance tried to force safelite on my for my LC windshield. I wasn't having it. I had to pay upfront ($2600) but they reimbursed me minus my deductible.
My insurance company has a broken glass hotline. The representative acknowledged that they use Safelyte software for processing claims. But they also stated that the repairs are not limited to Safelyte. When my VIN number was keyed in, it was determined that a specific Lexus OEM windshield and trim kit were required. I had the replacement done by a local independent contractor.
Unfortunately, a second replacement was done within 11 months of the first. Both were caused by oncoming rocks in highway construction areas. Both repairs were absolutely perfect. I don’t think any material short of gorilla glass would have withstood these impacts.
I have owned my ES for just over 2 years now and already have had to replace the glass twice. I do wonder about the quality of the glass or if its just bad luck..The first replacement was OEM, that lasted maybe a year, the second was Safelite. Will see how things go. Fingers crossed.
Safelite does use OEM in most cases. If they dont you can tell them to. Used them before without issue. If you hire anyone make sure to take pictures of your car before in case you need proof if something happens. We had another company swap out a windshield before and the guy scratched the hood, pillars, roof, etc. The company had to have the hood stripped and repainted and the car was only 2 months old. Another one didn't seal it correctly so when it rained it rained inside.
I dont think any windshield is immune these days. My wife's F150 was replaced twice, her Bronco Sport after the F150 was replaced 3 times and her RX350 got a small crack that was repaired. I've been lucky with my cars, but also dont drive as much.
That could probably be filled if you get it done right away. Get a pro's opinion. It's a lot more work to replace it and more potential for trim damage.

The good news is smaller chips or cracks in your windshield might be repairable without completely replacing the glass. The general rule is that any crack that’s smaller than a dollar bill can be repaired.

Disgusting story and excellent advice. Much like the wisdom of taking snapshots of any car you rent, especially from those fraudulent bastards at Hertz.
