ES300h RPM Jumping Issue
Watch the fuel economy readout on the big main screen when this happens, you are likely experiencing engine braking, where the fuel injectors are not opening but the engine is rotating. Watch the instant MPG bar on the right very closely.
My LS500 would obviously shut off the injectors but the engine was still turning upon deceleration sometimes, I could duplicate it.
I don’t drive me 22 ESh in sport mode but maybe I should try to duplicate your issue….

My gut feeling is what you are experiencing is by design and nothing to be concerned about.
Just to clarify, my LS500 was not hybrid. But, I've had 4 Toyo-Lex hybrids going back since April 2008 so I'm very used to weird noises when I don't expect them, gas engine shutting off or turning on when unexpected, etc. Your experience of RPMs really doesn't surprise me and I don't even pay too much attention anymore to RPMs, etc. on a daily basis because everything is "normal" to me LOL.

I had a Honda hybrid for a short period of time before this car and I don't recall such an issue but Toyota/Lexus is likely different technology.
As I have been paying close attention, I am noticing that the issue seems to only appear more when the battery is fully charged - I'll continue to test this.
I just want to be able to give Lexus every detail when I explain this - I used to being able to offer a potential diagnose to a tech but this hybrid stuff is such a different animal.
Hmmmmm, this has real promise as a cause/solution. So, again with hybrid being so foreign to me, the theory is that the MG1 is going to spin all/most of the time however if the battery is full, it has to burn that energy off - as spinning the ICE? I am noticing, but will continue to monitor, that the RPM bump seems to occur when the battery is at capacity - it most often when I get onto slower roads after having cruised at highway speed for 30-40 minutes. Make sense?

This is the case only if you see 8 bars on the battery monitor.
