Exactly why I don’t like it and will try to adjust it to downgrade it to be more like conventional cruise control.

BUMP

Recently acquired a 2023 ES300H Ultra Luxury. Loving it so far.

One thing I don’t like, that’s present as the default in pretty much every new vehicle, is the radar cruise control. In theory it’s great; in practice it’s incredibly annoying. Too many idiot drivers here in the US. Even at the lowest sensitivity the radar cruise control slows the car down too often as a reaction to an aforementioned idiot slowing down for zero reason (probably on their phone), switching lanes for zero reason, etc etc. I much prefer setting a speed and tweaking accordingly via the RES/SET buttons and going around the idiots. Got really spoiled living in Germany amongst people who are perhaps a little less entitled when it comes to owning and operating a vehicle…

I searched the owner’s manual PDF for a way to permanently disable it. No dice. Anyone know of a way? Or am I resigned to pressing and holding 1.5 seconds to override it every time? #FirstWorldProblems I know.

Pretty sure you have to override it every time unless you know of a way to hack the system. I actually love it and prefer it over the traditional cruise.

I am not a fan of it neither: I find that I am slowing down "unnoticeably" when there is an open passing lane on my left. I'd rather maintain my speed and just pass instead of slowing, s l o w i n g, s l o....oh damn, I advanced the sensitivity too far. Might as well turn the radar off and not use it at all.

Can try and unplug and if no codes and car knowing not hooked up may default to standard cruise. Shouldn't hurt to try.

When you turn the cruise control ON, can you not just hold the button down an extra few seconds and have it turn on but without the radar distancing function? I see what MikeMU said, but it's really not a big deal, just pretend that the computer is slow.

Yes you can but he is trying to avoid having to do that every time as per his post.

While I suppose some may have a different opinion on unplugging the radar sensor I wouldn't advise doing that. The radar sensor used for the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is also used with other Lexus Safety System functions such as Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and Pre-Collision System (PCS). For the PCS, the Owner's Manuals state:
The pre-collision system uses a radar sensor and front camera to detect objects (→P.###) in front of the vehicle. When the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with an object is high, a warning operates to urge the driver to take evasive action and the potential brake pressure is increased to help the driver avoid the collision. If the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with an object is extremely high, the brakes are automatically applied to help avoid the collision or help reduce the impact of the collision.

Latest nuance to the Dynamic Radar Cruise is Curve Speed Reduction. Forward facing camera
detects a curve and will slow the cruising car a bit (or a lot). Three settings, off / low / high.

You have to engage it regardless so what's the challenge just engaging it with the override!

It’s obviously not that much of a challenge to just hold the button for 1.5s to get it to constant speed mode instead of radar mode.

It would be nice if manufacturers would allow you to choose one or the other as the default system, so I wouldn’t have to engage 1.5s of brain power every single time I use cruise control. I’m clearly not the only one who thinks the radar cruise control is annoying in real world driving; at least we still have an option to revert to the old way. For now.

#FirstWorldProblems indeed.

Had forgotten reading that years ago and would not have mentioned unpluging. Thanks for reminder. It most likely would throw a code.
