Back to the OP's question, the main Owner's Manual seems to have no instructions on pairing phones at all
and the slightly smaller Nav/Multimedia book shows references to both the "8 and "12 screens so it looks like
you should get someone to spring for a book.

Was the holder held on with clips?

NO. Unfortunately the front plate holder is attached with 2 screws into the solid black plastic behind the spindles. So when you remove it you see two "dealer installed" holes. But it doesn't damage the spindles and is pretty inconspicuous unless you know it's there...

There are videos on youtube on how to repair that if you're interested, it's quite a simple process.

There are also companies that make color-matched plugs that fill the holes. When installed, they look no worse (probably better) than the parking sensors.

Here is one source, but there are a number of others.

Here's an update to the missing manual saga. The guy at Newport Lexus INSISTED to AAA that Lexus does not give out hard copies of the missing "Navigation and Multimedia System Owners Manual", and that "it's only an online thing". Yeah, right. The 300 page book covers half the stuff in the car, and it's only online?

Not easily deterred, I inititated an online chat with corporate Lexus. She asked for my VIN, looked it up, promply apologized, and said I'd have one in the mail in 7 days. Took perhaps 2 minutes. My faith in Lexus is intact. Their dealers, not so much...
