Default 30K Service Question

The service manual says to replace brake fluid at 30K. Is this something you guys would recommend?

Yes. Brake fluid is hydrophilic, i.e. it likes water. Water dissolves in brake fluid and it can cause corrosion in the brake system. It is a good idea to change it.

It is also a good idea to change coolant periodically. I remember when I was a child my dad used to joke that changing coolant makes as much sense as changing air in the tires. Now I understand that coolant dissolves oxygen over time and that makes it corrosive.

Yes, I would. I actually missed it when my ES hit 30,000 miles... when I realized I missed it I had it done when I changed oil at 35 K miles... actually a little surprised that the service writer at the dealership didn't mention it.

Get it done. It is about $120. I get all my maintenance done a la carte. The 30,000 mile maintenance is brake fluid changed, oil and filter changed tire rotation and cabin and air filters replaced. The rest is a bunch of inspection that is not needed IMO. This service will be about $550. Getting each service done a la carte would be around $220 plus the filters. The filters are about $20 each and takes five minutes to replace. Total $260.

The coolant in your Lexus is designed to last for 100,000 miles...
