But that is a key that is used to start the ignition , so it takes a lot of abuse and handling. My Lexus fob just sits in my jacket pocket or similar...I virtually never touch the thing. Looks brand new after 4 years, so I really don't see why it needs protection.

If you find no use for it, all the better for you. Some folks like to find covers for it for reasons that suit their needs whether it be fashion, cleanliness, protection, or a combination or something entirely different. It's just a key fob cover. They were invented for a purpose and serve that purpose. Not everyone wants them. The ones that came with my Lexus seemed a little too "old man" looking for me.(that isnt to insult anyone) It didn't suit my style, so I went and got one that did.

Picture is worth a thousand words.. I use the leather ones that came with the car but purchased the rubber ones for my wife's CT200h

My wife has a purple silicone cover and mine is blue. The covers first of all are easy to distinguish our individual ones with both laying on the counter. Silicone cover less chance of scratching my phone when both are in the same pocket. Fells better in the hand and less slippery. Best of all it looks a lot better than black plastic. It is $8. All being said if you find no use than you just saved $8.

The one for my wife's CT was a little less than that direct from China
