I'm not absolutely certain as to just what the system did. I heard an audible alert and a warning appeared on the multi information screen. I know that I immediately reacted by hitting the brakes, but I'm not sure how much of the stopping of the car was the result of the safety system stopping the car or how much was the result of my hitting the brakes. The stop was, by no means, a hard "panic" stop. At a minimum, when the system gave the audible alert and the alert appeared on the multi information display, it caused me to react sooner than I might otherwise have reacted. The car was at a complete stop a good 10-15 feet behind the car in front of me. Thus, I can't say for certain what would have happened without the safety system, but I'm glad that it was there and working.
I would guess that my speed was probably in the 25-30 mph range when I and/or the car started to brake.
Thank you, I have had a similar experience. Glad I went for the PCS option on my ES.

While I'm a bit upset with myself for allowing myself to be a bit distracted while driving (I should know better), I'm happy to know that the system does actually work as designed. Until today, I had no idea of whether the system was actually operational. Immediately after the incident, I felt like I was in one of the TV ads that various auto manufacturers now have to show how their collision avoidance systems work.
One of the main reasons why I decided to trade my 2013 ES and get a 2017 ES was that I had regretted that i had bought the 2013 without the collision avoidance system. The 2017 model year was the first for which the Safety System + was standard on all ES. I can't imagine ever buying another car without a collision avoidance system and other safety systems, such as the blind spot monitor, which, to me, is the safety feature that shows its value on a daily basis.
lesz was pretty much spot on. I said I did not have an active destination, and that was true. However, I did check and the last destination I had was paused but not deleted. So the dot was indeed showing that location relative to my direction.
exactly! Same thing happened with mine. As soon as I deleted destination the dot went away
