I recently got my new ES300h from the US and got it shipped to Jordan (Small country in the middle east for whoever feels curious). My main issue is that Jordan only has 90 and 95 Octane fuel and I'm not sure which one to use. It's worth mentioning that 95 octane is quite cleaner than the 90 octane for some reasons that I can't really seem to get the hang of.

I know that the minimum is 87 for the ES, But I have the feeling that the O95 is going to be healthier for the engine.

As you state, 87 is the minimum, so why not stick with the 90? After all, the ES 300 engine is not a performance style engine that needs high octane/

Just out of academic interest, what is the price of a litre of gas in Jordan (say in $US) and what's the difference price wise between 90 and 95?

I would use 90 RON and save your money. Just buy it at a name brand station like Total.

 

That's about the price per gallon-ish that I'm paying in Virginia and Maryland. I didn't expect that.

 

I am a little surprised...the price of the 90 octane in Jordan is actually more expensive than a litre of gasoline in the Toronto Ontario region, and gas in Canada is expensive compared the USA.

Works out to 1.05 per litre Canadian for the 90 Octane.

 

I say this admitting that I don't know much about international fuel standards/ratings, but are we sure that 90 octane means the same thing in the US that it does in other parts of the world?

 

Most likely Jordanian octane is RON like in Europe. In the US we use AKI number for octane.

It is approximately 90 RON (Europe) = 87 AKI (US), i.e. REGULAR
and 95 RON (Europe) = 93 AKI (US), i.e. PREMIUM

ES300h is designed to run on regular. Filling it up with premium is just a waste of money. As far as which fuel is cleaner or better - it has nothing to do with octane. You want a cleaner/better fuel - buy it from a reputable brand.

 

The prices of gasoline in Jordan are pretty expensive compared to neighboring countries! We don't have oil, We import it and we have crazy taxes over here, So it makes sense that yours is cheaper

 

Yeah I guess I'm gonna go with regular O90 from Total or Gulf, Let's try things out for the time being

 

You could play the gas roulette game, usually run 90 octane then fill up with 95 once every 3rd or 4th tank full The rational being the "cleaner" 95 octane might clean up deposits left from the 90 octane.
