I always keep my rear sunshade up but when you drive the car daily that shade will go up and down several times. I am worried that it may worn out the motor or something.

When you hit reverse, it there a way that it will stay up? It is not found anywhere in the menu setting to conveniently set it to turn off the sunshade down on reverse. It is Lexus dealer only setting.

When the car was new I asked the dealer to program it to longest delay possible so it won't go down and up when switching from park to drive. By default it goes down right away when you don't shift fast enough from park to drive just like the side mirror.

I used to have MB E500 and I have worn out the motor on my sunshade and it is not even auto down when reverse. I just hope Japanese motors will be more reliable than German motors.

What are your thoughts?

 

There is a button on the dash to control the rear shade, between the seat heat/fan controls.

 

That's the "Up/Dn" control.

 

Yep, that's the one I was thinking of.

 

The standard delay for the sunshade to go down when the vehicle is put into reverse is .7 seconds, but that can be changed up to 1.2 seconds via custom setting 37, which is one of the settings that can only be changed by the dealer.

Also, custom setting 36 disables the sunshade from going down at all when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. That one is also one that can only be changed by the dealer.

If, however, you have access to Techstream, you can hook it up to the vehicle and change those settings (or any other "dealer-only" settings) yourself.

 

Or the Carista smartphone app paired with an OBDII/Bluetooth adapter. Runs about $30 for the setup, vastly cheaper than Techstream AND supported here by member name "Carista."

I would probably disable the auto down feature over the weekend.

I was looking at the GS forum and they we're having some issues on the rear shade wearing out. Replacing it by yourself is a PITA.

 

Or you can tint the window to not use it at all or that much. I personally don't bother with it now that the windows are tinted. Only used it for 3 days total.

 

Since I have the rear window shade and side shades, which I paid for, I opted to not also buy window tinting. So far, works fine. The Lexus tech gave me stats that the windows are 98% and 99% UV protection already (he gave me the stats for each window, slightly different, before I bought the car, but I don't recall now). So with the UV and sunshades, I didn't want to pay even more for tinting. As far as wearing out the rear sunshade? Only time will tell.

 

I figured if/when the rear shade fails, then the shade remains where it's at, as oppose to disabiling it.

 

I wouldn't give it any concern. Do you worry that your power window motor will fail if you lower and raise it too much?

I also had an MB with a shade--if you left it up for several hours, it would not roll back tight, took several tries to get it to retract tightly on the spool. Have had 4 Toyota/Lexus with them, never a problem.

 

My windows hardly open at all. If the window motor breaks its easy to replace anyway but on the rear shade it is going to be a pain. Buy anyway I disabled it over the weekend using Techstream.

How did you "test" the headlight leveling?
