$25,000 Chevy Impala Rides Better Than The ES

You are taking a comment out of context. The car was equipped with their precision test gear, which includes a calibrated fuel bottle. Then, they took a short term reading at steady state cruise conditions. No start-up, acceleration, maneuvering and the like. That's like taking a momentary reading with your current mpg gage. It gives an indication of point-in-time drag/efficiency, but is not an indicator of mpg. Very doable mpg, for the condition.

Got it. As I said, I recalled reading that CR reported that info - I wasn't quoting them since i couldn't recall which issue. I think I recall they compared the Accord's mpg against other cars and they were a lot lower. That said, what you're saying is that their data is more theoretical and not real world testing. I think they should reflect real world conditions, otherwise it's sort of misleading in my mind.

The only data that Consumer Reports that is relevant to me is reliability and cost of ownership. PERIOD.
Driving and owning a car is completely subjective. People buy cars for a multitude of reasons. Whether it drives "better" than the ES is also subjective. If it does, great job to GM for finally building a competitive car.

"Rides better" is also a subjective term. The "Lexus ride" as I call it is not about just bump isolation...its not a numb ride like you have in an old Lincoln for instance, The overall feel of a Lexus has a lot to do with refinement, the way the car moves over the road and the bumps, the smoothness of everything it does without wallowing or floating. I've driven cars that ride better than an LS let alone an ES from purely a bump isolation experience, but overall the ride isn't the same.

Interesting. I've tried some domestic cars (Chrysler, Chevy) which had a nice ride when they are brand spanking new. However, after a year or 2, problems creep in and the ride isn't anywhere what it was in the beginning.

I would say the same. After a few years, I wonder what the owners would think/say about the Impala. Same reason CR don't make it a "Recommended" car since there's no historical data from owners for this new model year.

Gotta give them time...we've had our fair share of issues with our Jeep, little nagging problems you just wouldn't have with a Lexus, Toyota, Honda, etc. BUT, the ride is excellent and is just as excellent at 32,000 miles.

My nephew ordered a new Impala. Almost $40K.
It is a nice car, but it isn't a plush car. Seats feel hard and one can tell the materials used are... Chevrolet-like.
I wouldn't spend that kind of money for it.

A couple of months ago the Impala came in 2nd in a C&D comparo which included Avalon, Charger, Chrysler 300, Cadenza and Azera. The As Tested price was $35-$36k. The Avalon won the comparo over the Impala by 3 points.
A pretty good mix of competitive cars IMO.
