A CVT has a infinite number of gearing options, and the gearing is customized to every load situation and acceleration demand. That coupled with more low end torque makes a hybrid with a CVT actually more responsive off the line than a vehicle with a standard automatic transmission.

I personally don't like CVTs just because I dont like the way the power is delivered, or the way they cause the engine to drone, but from a safety perspective there is no issue.
I understand, thank you Steve, although my concern was never about the 'off the line' performance but rather the mid-range passing/avoidance maneuvers.

The 2013 is a minor change and very disappointing.
I also traded a 2007 ES350 UL. Had all the options. Also had a goofy tranny and rattles. I couldn't disagree with you more on the minor change in the 2013. It is a better car in every way possible. It's well laid out on the inside and looks much better inside. No rattles (knock on wood). The outside looks much better and sportier, handles better, performs better. I swore I wouldn't buy another first year car, but I'm glad I bought this one!

I find this irritating rather than allowing the car to coast as with the transmission in my 2010. I took my car back to the dealer to complain and was told the car was operating within normal tolerances. Has anyone else notice this problem? My car does it every time between 35 and 40 miles per hour.
Yes, I just bought 2013 ES 350 few days ago (less than 100 miles) and I do notice the same issue. I am thinking of showing it to dealer. I have also noticed that, when it downshifts (feels like tapped on break), the RPM goes up quickly and balances the break and gas to maintain the speed. I think that BA (Break Assist) is too sensitive or predictive. Have you had any other issue that you can think of is related with this?

I've have noticed the slight slowdown/down shift, I like it. Have learned to expect the engine to slow me down coming to a stop. I feel like I'm saving on the brakes. Smart transmission.

I also like the way the transmission does this, it is unobtrusive and seems to know just the right time when to do this.
