OEM extended life oil filter
hello all
i am going to get my oil changed at the l dealership soon and was wondering if there a lexus part which is an extended life oil filter?
i do have a reason as to why i am going to get this done a the dealership and cannot bring my own parts in this case. wanted a longer life filter so i can go 10k miles without worries.
google search did not result in success.
side question: is it beneficial to replace the filter housing?
thank you

The 04152-YZZA1 filter is listed for both our ES350, and our new 2018 RX350. OEM filter changes for the ES350 is 5K with 5w/30 dino oil; and the RX350 takes 0w/20 full synthetic with recommended 10K oil changes. I've been doing 10K oil changes with Mobil1 Full Synthetic oil in the ES350 for the past 150K miles. I've rarely used the same oil filter twice in a row - I've tried Fram Ultra, Mobil1, Purolator, K&N, Baldwin, Denso, and Toyota - they all have done the job with no issues. Thus, the OEM Toyota filter is good for 10K and for either dino or full synthetic oil.

Quality in materials. The filter media of lower end filters will be made of cellulose. Next higher end filters will have a blend of cellulose and synthetic media. Top of the line filters contain a full synthetic media - fiberglass. Filters are also given an efficiency rating - a filter's ability to trap and contain contaminates of a given micron size. For example a filter with a 95% efficiency rating at 25 microns means that filter can trap 95% of contaminants that are 25 microns and larger. The higher the percentage and lower the micron size, the better.
Replacing the filter housing is not necessary unless it is damaged and leaks. They used to be metal; recent housing are made of a composite plastic material. Our ES350 came with a metal housing; our new RX350 has the composite housing. I've already purchased a metal housing to replace it (same as for the ES350) next time I do an oil change.

I use M1 5W30 EP and OEM filter. I go exactly 10000 miles between OCI and no problem. I bet that filter can go 20000 without problems.

many forums including this 1 recommend filter replacement mid oil replacement cycle. is there no good reasoning to this practice? if you say an oem toyota filter can go 20k miles, why do some people do this?

toyota filter is ok, but there are better built filters that are guaranteed to 15-20k milles.
they are better constructed, just look and compare for yourself.
Spending $5 more for a better filter when you go 10-15k seems like a good idea to me, but to each it’s own.

If you are going to go 10K miles with full synthetic oil and you use an OEM filter or an aftermarket synthetic or synthetic blend filter, you do not need to change the filter at 5K. Many folks get paranoid that if you go 10K when the oil change recommendation for your car is 5K, that the filter will clog up. It wont under normal driving conditions. That being said, if you will be driving under 'severe driving conditions', then you should stick with the 5K oil change interval with full synthetic oil. Severe driving conditions would include towing, off-roading, long idling (cabs, cop cars, etc...) or other high stress driving, like driving in severe temps (freezing temps or desert driving). LjeksesES didn't say the OEM filter can go 20K - his statement is to show confidence in the OEM filter.

toyota oem filters are not designed/intended for extended oil change intervals beyond factory recommended, that does not mean they will not work for longer OCI of course, they may.
its your car, if you feel like saving $5 is important than go OEM filter for 10-15k miles.

She wants to go 10K which is standard on 2012+ ES350 models. 2013, I believe, is when the ES350 came stock with synthetic motor oil and 10K recommended oil changes. 2007-2018 ES350 model years, all, use the the same OEM oil filter, 04152-YZZA1. Thus, it's really not an extended-life oil filter for any model year if it's matched with synthetic oil. Now, if she was going to use that same filter with non-synthetic oil, then it would fit the definition because she would be attempting to extend the life of the dino oil, which has a 5K replacement recommendation.

I guess I would do a little experimentation before I would stretch oil changes. The 1st would be to look at and do an oil evaluation at the recommended 5K service. My 2010 just turned 55K and I have since day one changed the oil with dino at 5K . Visually the oil looks clean and test data looks very good. Filter is always a light brown in color. If I wanted to extend changes I would do the same evaluations at 6K , 7K , 8K , 9K and then at 10 K. As I see more contamination I would use that as my stopping point. Maybe 7500 is that point or more . Once established that would be my new change limit. Also considering that I have only used dino oil I wouldn't change at this point in the life of the car. Pushing the limits on oil changes is more of a convenience for lazy and cheap car owners. If the average driver puts on 12,000 miles a year that's only 2 changes so there is really no big deal here.

Keep in mind, the recommended service schedule is just that, a recommendation based on OEM products. There are better oils and oil filters out there, just like there are better tires, brakes, etc than OEM. Also keep in mind that the owner's manual is a one time print manual; there are no updates to introduce new products and improved methods.
