Emergency problem
i really hope someone can help me with this. last night liquid that looked like water was noticed under my es350 in the evening. drove less than 5 minutes and the coolant indicator was almost full right. stopped at first gas station and bought coolant. opened hood and coolant seemed dry. used half can to fill. drove a few blocks and meter moved to mid position drove a few more blocks and meter started swinging like crazy. far right far left, middle etc. lights came on. red emergency yellow skid yellow engine and remark, check VSC engine also started knocking, clicking. ideas? thanks |
Coolant is reddish color. What color was the fluid on the ground? To confirm the color you can use white paper towels and soak some of it in. It could be simply the condensation from the AC...
For the lights, have you read the codes? This sounds like a misfire but without codes it is just a guess... |

For the lights, have you read the codes? This sounds like a misfire but without codes it is just a guess... the fluid on the ground was clear, like water. there were no codes given, just the lights I mentioned. i am away from home, city so can't read my manual. this isn’t a misfire, it’s seriou. burning smell |
OP, are you talking about temperature gauge? No DTC code? How old is the car? When you notice any fluid tasting is one way of finding what it is.

it is a 2007. Raining now so hard to see fluid if leaking. The wild swings back and forth of meter is not a good sign. also the burning smell. What would the signs be for a radiator problem? |
The temp gauge going up and down means it likely got air into the cooling system, sputtering/misfires could mean coolant in the cylinders. Could be water pump fail, or thermostat stuck closed, gasket leak, etc. If you are not good at troubleshooting this yourself, I would suggest taking it to a dealer or a good shop. Also note that it doesn't have to be a Lexus dealer, Toyota dealers see these engines too. Where in ON are you?

Lexus of RH has really good service in case you need to go that way... Fingers crossed it is something simple and affordable to fix! |
Hopefully you did not cook the engine. When you start to hear mechanical knocking noise it usually means the engine is overheated. Good luck and I hope it is fixable.

red emergency yellow skid yellow engine and remark, check VSC engine also started knocking, clicking. I've been told by a master tech that anytime there is an engine code the computer will turn off the VSC and traction control. That gives you the other lights. |

I pray with you that the engine is not fried; otherwise repair is simple. Good luck. |
Thanks guys for your help.
I dropped off the car yesterday at a garage, recommended by a friend. With Lexus, I would have had to wait longer. He told me it is the water pump and thermostat as you guys suspected. He ordered them from Lexus and they arrived this morning. Now the big test will be if the knocking noise is still there or not when he's finished. I'll keep you posted. He's aiming for 3pm pickup. |

For Pete's bloody sake........why buy and install a new coolant pump (and thermostat) before determining if the engine is junk?? An engine that was/is knocking and clicking is probably junk. How much coolant was remaining in the system before anything was disturbed. Little or no coolant, then the engine will be junk. The system should have been simply filled with water, the coolant pump checked for freely rotating, the engine oil quantity checked, the engine started and run while listening for ugly noises before spending money on it.

I would assume that his garage did this before replacing the pump and thermostat. Hopefully he picked up his car yesterday afternoon and all went well! |
