That is the code for the speed sensor. Is your speedometer working properly? I can imagine the tranny shifting improperly if the computer doesn't know the correct speed of the vehicle.

The VSC check light did come on and the car did die a few weeks ago. All the dash lights went crazy and the gauges went to zero.
But this time I just erased the codes and it seems to work but shifts weird and gas mileage has gone down.

I got P0500 recently on my 07 with engine & vsc light and check vsc display. No problem with speedo or transmission shifting or anything else apparently. I clear the code and it comes back as soon as the vehicle starts moving forward. Trusted mechanic on phone says prob something in the wiring but can't book it for several weeks. Any suggestions?

Check your battery. A failing battery with low voltage is often the cause of warning lights & codes as they are very sensitive to voltage.

as soon as I checked the voltage, the next am it wouldn't start! Boosted it and ran it for a while to charge battery and still ok. No change on the code and the warning lights though, It goes in to my trusted mechanic dec 15...

trusted mech found another code beneath the p0500 indicating the vsc sensor which he replaced. now the p0500 is left w the ck engine light still on; dont have (never had) any speedo or shifting problems. he's now looking at the trany speed sensor ... disconnecting it to see if any change in symptoms/codes. ongoing

a happy update. after checking ecm and cluster panel to no avail, he found corroded wiring in the wiring harness located under the engine fuse compartment. Fixed and everything back to normal! The dedication spent tracking down the cause was impressive. Thank you Japan Auto!

as I said, in my case it was caused by corroded wires in the harness under the engine fuse box. this is what the bill says
