Why does the Avalon get better mpg than the ES?

I assume the mileage differences you are looking at are EPA estimates.
Having owned both a 2006 Avalon and a 2010 ES350 I can tell you that I'm averaging 1-2mpg better with the ES350 that I did with the Avalon. I averaged right around 28mpg with the Avalon and between 29-31mpg with the ES350.
If I had my druthers I would have purchased another Avalon, but since it was for my wife, we settled on the ES350. I enjoy a bigger cabin and she enjoys the smaller feeling of the ES350. While both vehicles are very quiet inside, I thought the Avalon had a slightly better ride.

I was following a new Avalon today and it was a nice looking car. Reminded me if you took a ES350 and a GS350, then combined them into one car. The one I saw was a dark maroon or brown color. Nice vehicle.

They are indeed very nice vehicles. Think of it as a ES350 with a much bigger cabin and a smoother, quieter ride. Has all the same bells and whistles that the 350 does for right around the same price.

Also no I am not looking at buying new, The 07's got the added gear to the tranny but regardless they still get less mpg. Does not make sense at all why to me.
Also does a RX have to run on premium or can it run just fine on regular?
Side note but how much is a camry XLE lacking compared to a ES?

I'm likely going to be buying a 300 or 330, This thread was moved into this section of the forum. But the debate is valid for all. Except still doesn't make sense why the ES uses less or even the same mileage as the Avalon with Premium gas.

I recall from shopping for '07 and '10 ES that the ES recorded faster 0-60 times than the Avalon. Possibily different gearing and premium unleaded. Car & Driver was 6.2 sec vs. 6.6 and Consumer Reports was 6.4 sec vs. 7.1.

i know this is a little off topic, but C&D had a comparison test b/w 05 avalon touring, chrysler 300, ford 500, buick lacrosse, nissan maxima, and kia amanti. the avalon was the quickest to 60 at 6 seconds flat beating the maxima by 0.1 seconds. the fastest accelerating car was the avalon... and back then they were rated at 280hp... its weird how theyve gotten slower every year even with the 6spd trans..
