I have a new 2010 ES350 since Oct 2010, less than 7000 miles, everything seems to work fine except brake when back up. If driving or back up out of parking space, brake quiet, no noise but if back up farther (30 or 50fts), put foot on break pedal then will hear a loud sound like shifting gear. Is it normal. Thanks for the advice
there is a metal spring that behind or at the edges the Break Pad. This is what needs to be adjusted and then there will be no more noise.
Just explain it to the dealer the way you did in this thread and it should be a very quick repair.
Basicaly the break pad has room to slide back and forth and that is what you are hearing when you break in reverse is the shoe hitting the calliper and a transmission like metal thunk.

No, Squeaking while backing up is not normal. My rear pads were replaced under warranty at 2000 Miles.
