Default MPG Readout Optimistic?

I have a 2010 ES350 that now has about 1,000 miles on it. At each fill up, I check the Average MPG (I reset it at each fill up) and the tank MPG and both were nearly the same at 28.2 mpg. When I calculated miles driven by gallons used, I get 25.5 mpg. I only have three tankfuls so far but have any of you experienced optimistic MPG readings?

You will get some varation unless you fill the tank completely up for the test. The way I did it was to make sure that you fill the tank until you see gas at the top of the filler neck. It takes a little time to do this but it is not a problem to do. Drive it for 100 or 200 miles and refill the same way. Then do the math. Try it a few times and get the avg.

I've always found that my speedometer is about 2 mph fast and the mpg is a little optimistic. I just fill to the automatic shutoff and reset my trip odometer but most of the time the reported mpg is slightly higher than the computed mpg.

So far my 2010 ES seems to be a little closer to my computed MPG than my 2007 was. Tire wear would have a slight effect on this as well.

Default Nav arrival time estimation not accurate ?

I notice that when i choose on the nav the time of arrival estimation, it is faulty for about 1 hour (too much), but the travelling time is ok. The clock is fine.

Has anyone notice that ?

Looks like you are relatively new here, but this comes up in almost every MPG thread over the last 3 1/2 years since this car's release.

Yes, the computer is optimistic by 1 - 2 mpg. Sometimes even more, like your case, but rarely.

I just bought a Garmin GPS. It shows the vehicle's speed. The GPS shows that the speedometer is 2 MPH faster than the vehicle's actual speed. This is purposefully done to expire the warranty that much faster. Honda settled a class action lawsuit by extending warranties 2% on several cars for this exact same thing. Manufacturers say that the speedometer is within government accuracy specifications.

I had a 1994 Volvo 940 that was spot on. I tested it at every radar speed indicator on the road and it was always spot on.

Welcome to 2010. Why can't manufacturers make a speedometer that is spot on. Is it really that hard?

Your car is still new. Only three fill ups? Give it some time. Eventually. you'll start to see the variance between lifetime and tank MPG.

Default MPG in 2007 ES350

We bought our 07 ES350 in Oct. 09. Still mild enough for decent mileage figures. On our only semi-legitimate trip we were between 32-33 mpg. Low 20's in local driving however.
Haven't checked lately but i'm sure under that which is normal in cold weather. Dealership had tire pressure set 35-36psi. More than i normally keep in tires, but tried to lower and low tire pressure light came on. So back up to 35-36.
If it continues to get 32+ mpg on future trips i'm happy.

Wow! Does this thing lie or what. This tankful had a tank average of 27.9 mpg but the calculated value, miles driven divided by gallons used was 25.0 mpg.

Anybody else compared theirs?

My '08 4Runner did the same thing - about 10% high. It is really not a big deal. Just use it as an indicator that if something is wrong the mileage may drop drastically.
