ES350 Won't Upshift from 5th to 6th gear / Replace Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
I found this solution on an LS forum and it worked for my ES as well.
Symptom: Car would not up-shift from 5th into 6th gear when the gear selector was in "D" (Drive mode). Engine was running around 2,000 RPMs at 55 mph (it should be around 1,600 RPMs at 55 mph).
The car would shift into 6th gear when in "S" (Sport mode).
According to the repair manual, one possible cause could be a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.
Solution: Replaced Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and now the car shifts normally.
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor: Lexus P/N 89422-33030, Denso P/N 19310000
NOTE: For this repair, the Denso 1931000 part was purchased from RockAuto.
Tools required: 19mm or 3/4" wrench.
About one or two cups of coolant will drain out of the system after you remove the old sensor.
There should be enough room to perform the repair without having to remove any other components.
Here is a video I made for this repair: https://youtu.be/I3kpBFlOME4?si=kv16yAFI9FrPXK-P
