My car has the basic radio in it. Are there any aftermarket upgrades for the ES stock sound system? Speaker changes? Add a sub? Head unit?

 

Welcome to CL. This has been covered many times. I recommend you try a search using the term Speakers. You will find a lot of info.

 

Here is a link to my Audio upgrade. It has been 8 years since I began with amps &speaker and 5 years since completion. I'm sure there are far better HUs (wireless CarPlay, etc.) out there by now.

I got tired of possibly the worst stereo ever sold in any car and upgraded my 2007 basic, plain Jane, vanilla, tin can sounding (actually worse) poor excuse of a sound system. I bought a Metra conversion kit, the module to keep the steering wheel controls, a Kenwood ddx9905s, and JL Audio C-2 speakers for the doors and a JL Audio 10" sub in the trunk. Turns out the stock amp is a piece of poop so I wound up having to upgrade that as well. I had a shop install the new amp as a new electrical wire had to be ran to the battery and I didn't want to mess with that at the time. Now I love my stereo. It sounds awesome. Better for $2,500! The JL Audio C-2 speakers sound great. I showed my stereo to an audiophile friend of mine and he commented several times how clear the speakers sound. One drawback to having such a kick *** system is songs with whistling sound like ****. Songs are tuned to be played over the radio on cheap *** factory installed systems. So Wiggle by Jason Derulo (featuring Snoop Dogg) sounds off during the whistling parts. An awesome stereo system will show flaws in the music.

Also, you will lose the built-in microphone and any noise cancellation the stock offers. And the antenna has a powered amplifier. I need to make some modifications to my install and setup a USB port to connect my phone to so I'm thinking about hooking up the 5v out from the Kenwood head unit to the 5v line for the antenna which I think also runs the built-in microphone. Now that it's finally cooled down I am working on my car every weekend.

 

Beside upgrading the sound system, you can consider upgrade the bodykit as latest style in the picture.
