Unhappy A/C Problem (Valve?)

Hi,

I just found these forums and think they are really great!

I have been without Air Conditioner all summer, even my 2 year old daughter is complaining! I turn on the air and everything is fine for about two minutes, then all I get is warm air. My mechanic put some gas in the a/c but it didn't fix the problem. Then he said there is some sort of valve that is shutting down before its supposed to and it needs to be replaced. He is charging me $500.

Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to lower the expense. Is this a part that can be ordered online cheaper? Is it difficult to install?

thanks,

next time do a forum search first before posting - this topic has been discussed in other threads. also, when you ask a question, tell us what year ES you have.

you probably need the AC Expansion Valve replaced. This is a common problem for older ES's - but one of the few problems that exist. My Lexus dealer charged about $350 installed. Negotiate.

mikelant-

oh man i feel sorry for you! i ran around in my ES like that for too long.
in short, you probably need to replace an expansion valve...gekko did and so did several others.
it shouldn't be awfully hard but i don't think you are allowed to work on your car's ac system unless you're certified for it....environmental protection laws.

and also....next time someone new asks a question, let's try and make ourselves look good and be a little more congenial

I agree, be nice to new CL members. They still learn how to navigate in this site.
