Engine shuts off

97 ES 300 about once a month goes thru a cycle where when I start the car it auto shuts off I have to start in neutral so I am able to give some gas so I can then put in drive. If I am coming to a stop it will idle down then shut off. This usually last about 30 min then back to normal start and drive.

Sounds like you have a bad Engine Coolant Sensor ECS. They’re about $30 online and they’re usually found right where the water line from the engine exits. It’s a short metal rod that screws into the water line with a cable connector on the other end. A thermistor inside changes value as it heats up and this tells the fuel system how to run the engine at various temperatures. This happened to me with a Saturn.
