Hello,
I always carry in my car a Bluetooth OBD2 code reader for when something pops up you can scan it quickly. You plug it into the port under the dash and connect it to a phone or tablet and there are applications you download from the appstore or play store. Run the app and it will scan your car and give you the trouble codes. The one I have is this one

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N0Q8LN9/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1497628481&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=veepeak&dpPl=1&dpID=410DYid6ISL&ref=plSrch

I know it's not as good as a more expensive code reader but for me it gets the job done.

Also if there is a Autozone somewhere in your area you can take your car there and they should be able to scan it for free.
