I just take all the plastic bits off and clean off-car; then wipe exposed areas with a mild cleaner.

You don't have to cover anything. Just take off all the plastic bits, spray the engine bay with degreaser and after 2 min rinse it. Then take it for a 10-20 min drive and then put the plastic back.

Default Cleaning engine and compartment

I have cleaned an RX330 and an ES350 using "Spray 9". I found it in auto stores and online. Very reasonably priced with a trigger sprayer. Obviously, you would remove the plastic covers. You may need new fasteners if you're unable to "reset" the old ones. Amazon has them. Just spray it on a cool engine , let it sit for 10-15 minutes and rinse off with a hose. No worries about covering anything at all. It does a great job! Have fun.
