Hey guys. I'm thinking about purchasing an ES model from when before they switched them up in 02. I would prefer something a little newer such as 99, 00 or 01.

What are the differences between the years?

Are there different versions of the models such as a Honda Accord DX, LX and EX? If yes, what are they called and what are the differences?

Last, what were the different color styles for all those years?

The body style you're referring to actually started in 1997. There is a website that explains all the model year difference, but I forget how to find it. Make sure you read the wikipedia article about this ES generation, as it explains a lot of the questions you had.

The ES did not have trim levels, instead there were special editions - Platinum and Coach. 2000 and 2001 MYs would be the most desirable in my opinion, due to all the little tweaks that happened with the mid cycle refresh. There were exterior changes in 2000 and engine updates in 1999.

The great thing about this generation is that it didn't have any model year specific issues. All you have to worry about is finding the cleanest and most maintained vehicle you can afford.

 

Toyotareference.com is a great resource to look up paint codes and the like. The models break down like this:

ES250 1990-1991 - first ES, identical to the Camry mechanically but a much nicer interior and different body styling.

ES300 1992-1996 - Arguably the best ES with few if any faults. Harder to find them these days in nice condition. The Camry was actually based on this ES not the other way around. This was the golden age of Toyota and Lexus, the overall package was outstanding and will probably never be equaled. 1992-1993 had the 3VZ-FE engine, after that the 1MZ-FE. 3VZ has known head gasket issues, 1MZ does not.

ES300 1997-2001 - Based on the generation 4 Camry, very similar mechanicals to the previous generation. A quieter car but a step back in body rigidity, still excellent cars with few faults. Engine sludge is a known issue if the oil is not changed on a regular basis. Engine got a power bump in 1999, and about the same time Lexus moved from the tried and true A541E transmission to the less bulletproof U140E. 2000-2001 are the most desirable model years, nicer front end treatments, tail lights, HID option, wood/leather steering wheel and a bit more wood trim as well.

I don't know much about the 2002+ ES as I have not owned one. I don't like the exterior styling as much but the interiors are extremely nice.

 

Thanks to both of you guys! I guess ill look for 00 or an 01 then. Can you tell me the differences between the basic edition, platinum and coach? I looked on Wikipedia but couldnt find to much specific info. I'm guessing one of those editions came with the HID's?

 

Coach and Platinum came with the special alloy wheels, unique badges and floor mats, birds eye maple instead of walnut trim. Not sure on the HIDs I believe it was still an option although the Coach and Platinum tended to be loaded up with all the good stuff. I would not get hung up on the Coach/Platinum just look for a 2000-2001 model in good condition.

The Platinum looks just like my car, we didn't have that model in Canada but the Millennium Edition is the same thing.

I would suggest a 97-99 model, personally. Stick with the A541E transmission. I have a 2001 and miss the transmission in my 98 Camry V6. The U140E has many more problems from what I have gathered on the web. Just my $.02. You can always upgrade the tail lights and front fogs to the refreshed look. Much easier than a tranny rebuild, IMO.

 

Your '98 Camry did not have a 5 speed auto.

It was about time an "ES differences" thread popped up...

 

Didn't the 2ES use the same transmission as the 97-99? Because I hear a lot more transmission failures from those cars, than 2000-2001. In the end, it will come down to maintenance regimens.
