Probably just spilled oil from the old oil filter when you removed it. Happends to everyone. It's almost impossible to change that filter without spilling some oil around it.

Some people hose down the oil filter area with some cleaner after the new one is installed.

It is important to know the severity of the leak. Is it just a few drops or more significant? A clean piece of cardboard or paper under the engine would give you an idea after sitting for a bit.

The filter has an integral o-ring that mates against the machined surface of the engine to provide the seal. It is possible (but not likely) that the o-ring from the removed filter got stuck to the engine and pulled from the filter. This could result in a more significant leak than just a few drops if it was not removed prior to installing the new filter. I would think you would have noticed if that had happened in your case since the filter and engine mating surface is visible with the filter off. Honda's CRV had trouble with that years ago and the resulting leakage caused fires when the oil was ignited by the exhaust manifold. The filter on the ES is positioned in such a way that any small leak shouldn't get onto the exhaust manifold (unless it's spraying under pressure).

Take care,

George
