Unhappy Unable to get a code

1996 es300 -check engine light turns on, but mechanic unable to get a code. The car first has extremely slow accelleration even when the pedal is all the way down then it kills. wait about 30 min. and driving great again and no check engine light, however, you turn the car off and on again and the check engine light turns on and the symptoms are there again.

Have you tried cleaning the IACV ? I'm not sure it gives a code.

Is he trying to read the code with a Handheld scanner or by using the diagnostic port in the engine?

Did he try reading the CEL while the light was on?

Unhappy still looking for problem with no code

He used the port next to the fuses under the steering wheel and the port closer to the pedal (the half round one). with two kinds of hand held scanners. while the light was on and off-cause it does that. within 30 min.

And yes the iacv was cleaned.

Oh, so he did it the right way.

I'd almost think it may be a bad ECU. If the CEL is on, there sould be no reason you can't get the code, except for a bad ECU.

I went to the local autozone and they got an EGR code. can this cause the car to stall?

Yes if the egr is carboned up it can't close during idle and it will run rough or stall...
