and if there is no stock sub, then your stock amp isn't configured to pass the signal on to anything other than speakers and you're looking at dumping the stock amp to hook up any aftermarket subs, yes?

hmm sounds like a new project, cause i got my 700watt alpine amp mono channel sitting in my garage with a kicker sub ..have u done this to ur car?
No i got my es300 when I had my son and there is no room in my trunk for my 2 12's and a stroller. I have done lots of research on how to do it tho and I have put my systems in other cars.
got my sub a few days ago sounds very nice cant wait till the sub finallly breaks in.... got a 12 inch alpine type r (500 rms) powered by a mtx tc6001 running at 2ohms which puts out 600 rms sounds nice!!! pics very soon.....
I thought vented sub boxes had to share the airspace with the listener to appreciate their full benefits. Are sealed boxes not the box of preference for trunk applications? How do you like the sound?

No. The port just enhances the low end of the bass. Take a look at the graph below. The thin black line is the output of the driver only. As you can see, output drops as you get close to the tuning frequency of the port, in this case 20hz (it's a home sub but the concept is the same). The blue line is the port output. It peaks at the tuning frequency. The dark blue line is the output of the combined driver and port. The two of them together combine for a nice frequency response.
Look at the driver output and compare it to the red line. That is maximum excursion. You never want your driver to cross that line with the signals you are sending the sub. It does cross around 16hz but that won't be a problem. The amp I'm using has a 20hz sub-sonic filter that will keep the output low below 20hz and driver excursion to a minimum.

It all depends on your goals and the driver you want to use.
