Question Check Engine Light Mystery - HELP!

Hi all!

I own a 1997 ES 300, and for the past three years the check engine light has come on when the outside temperature drops below 50 degrees. The light comes on immediately after the engine starts.

The first year this happened, 2003, the car was scanned and the shift cellanoid (excuse my spelling - not completely familiar with all of the parts) was replaced which seemed to solve the problem.

The follwowing year, the check engine light came on again. However, we had strange weather and I noticed that the light only came on when the temperature dropped below 50 degrees. My mechanic could not figure out what was wrong, so did nothing. Spring time rolled around and the light was gone.

Again this year, the light came on in early November. We tried replacing the transmission fluid yesterday, and the light was back on again today.

The car has about 83,000 miles, is regularly serviced and RARELY has anything below 93/94 octane gas.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks for your help,
Michelle

Cool

Go to an autoparts store & have them scan it. It's free. Write down the codes that show up (P0XXX) and come back & tell us.
Also any symptoms the car is showing would help.

Hi Michelle,

Welcome to CL! Your CEL sounds like it's being tripped off something from your emissions system. There's a good chance it's your EGR Modulator Valve or a bad O2. It's best to get the code read from a code scanner of course. My guesses are from experience on previous 1MZ-FE V6 powered vehicles.

Good Luck!
